Final Grant Deadline March 18th

The extended deadline submission for The Taking Focus BIPOC grant will finally come to a close on March 18th. This photo grant will go to a BIPOC photographer whose work focuses on racial injustice in the United States. As a documentary photographer you may be telling a personal story, you may be telling the story of your community. This is an opportunity to not only share your voice, but an opportunity to be a part of the change. The TF Giving Back Component is what helps make that possible. Never think that your work can not create change. Your work will always have an effect on someone.

New Burma

Myanmar Community Church Part One

I connected with the Myanmar, formally known as Burma, refugee community in San Diego last week. There is still the same gratitude and appreciation, but the most noticeable difference is the religious faith in the San Diego community is Christianity. It has been explained to me that the refugee community in San Diego is Christian because minority group’s population percentage is 70% Karen, 20% Chin, and 10% other ethnic minorities from Myanmar.

I can not wait to dig deeper into the community. Find their stories. And bring them to the surface because of the recent, positive political movements in Myanmar.

Burmese Refugee New Year Celebration

This community had much more depth and honest moments than I could capture in the short 4 hours I was privileged to photograph at the New Year celebration this weekend. I plan to pursue the refugees of Burma here in Bowling Green more extensively as I have time over my course studies here at WKU. Even with the language barrier I was given much more insight into who these refugees are culturally and economically than I could have ever imagined possible. I must thank Jimmy, also a refugee from Burma, for all his help with gaining access to their wonderful community.
